GangNam Style and Me
After years of Korean recording artists’ and music corporations’ trying to promote their products to the West, Psy, a seemingly random man in his 30s, successfully broke into the world market. He delivered Gangnam Style, a song just with a strong beat, a repetitive electronic melody, simple choreography and a few scattered English phrases. It works as both a dance anthem and a biting satire of Korean excess. The song and video have dominated worldwide charts for weeks.
I had known about Psy before this phenomenon and couldn’t be happier with his success. His music is accessible and enjoyable. It’s different from the typical slick, over-produced, and ‘manufactured’ K pop offerings. Gangnam Style is, at its very core, an infectious celebration. The immediate effect was that the moves were copied all over the world: in classrooms, living rooms, and even stadiums. Music can be a connective force between people. As people began bouncing around to Gangnam Style, they became a part of it.
It’s the raw enjoyment that intrigues me. I live by his quote: ‘You get tired you lose; you go crazy you win.’ I try to pursue my own life and my own passions with energy and my full heart. Psy followed his own dreams rebelling against his father’s wish to take over the family company producing computer chips. He took the streets pioneering his life with passion. Gangnam style to me is not only an internet sensation, but proof that passion will go a long way.
